Information regarding the requirement of laptop computers for undergraduate students

1. Introduction

At Mie university, many classes use computers as part of information education.

  • Creation of reports and presentation materials
  • Self-study using the internet and e-learning
  • View syllabus, register for courses, etc.
  • And many other tasks

In addition, in order to acquire the ability to utilize information processing while attending school, it is essential to make regular use of computers, including linking them with smartphones and using the cloud.

Therefore, Mie university has decided to require all undergraduate students entering the university to bring their own personal laptops.
Please note that you will be required to prepare or purchase a laptop computer when enrolling.

2. Recommended specifications and software

Information regarding recommended computer specifications and purchasing information will be provided on each faculty website.。


There is no requirement to purchase a new laptop if you already own one

Additionally, our university has a comprehensive licensing agreement with Microsoft, which allows students to use Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc.), Microsoft 365 cloud services, and Windows licenses free of charge while enrolled.
Therefore there is no requirement to buy office license

If it is difficult to purchase a laptop due to financial circumstances, the university will lend it to those who meet the conditions free of charge for a certain period of time.

3. Further information

At our university, we will further enhance lectures that utilize laptops, including lectures on information literacy.
We have introducedMie University's learning management system, Moodle and cloud services for educational institutions(Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace) which serve as the foundation for almost all university related activities. We have created a laptop friendly environment with Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) facilitys covering the whole university including ecture rooms, libraries, and learning commons.

「The CeMDS Support Desk」in the Center for Mathematical and Data Science(CeMDS) accepts a wide range of consultation services regarding the use of ICT (information and communication technology) in student life. We also provide support for setting up and using your laptop, so please feel free to come in for a consultation.
