Introduction

The purpose of my graduation thesis is to reveal why the Japanese cannot use English well, and to attempt to find better methods for learning English in the form of a case study using myself. Despite having studied English for about ten years, I am unable to use it well. This experience makes me regrettable. In my attempt to reveal the causes behind this, I hope to move on from those wasted years and provide some insight for those who find themselves in similar circumstances.

Chapter I

Chapter One is a study of my own case, where I attempted to reveal and classify the reasons why I was unable to succeed in learning English. It is because my case reflects some characteristics of typical failure of Japanese learners of English. Through looking into my own case, I found that motivation and goals are particularly important in acquiring good English skills.

Chapter II

Chapter Two consists of case studies of a few successful learners. The reasons why they were able to succeed in English learning were discussed in this chapter. Successful learners have several features in common, some of which are not found in my case.

Chapter III

Chapter Three is on how to learn English effectively. I have compared my case and successful learners, and through the comparison, attempted to find the most effective methods of learning. Learners are in various situations. There are some factors which seem to be important for English learning. I have not made clear the reasons why I cannot use English well and why great speakers can use foreign languages. Therefore, I will continue to try to find how to learn English effectively by considering all of the factors.

Conclusion

The most important points of my argument are given in the Conclusion. There are various reasons why English is difficult to master for Japanese people. I have not found the convincing reasons why Japanese learns are unsuccessful in learing English. Englsih learners are in different situations, which means that there are a variety of reasons.
