Chapter I Introduction

We may come across a lot of unique expressions in the press. Especially headlines in newspapers or magazines seem to play an important role to catch readers' attention. It is likely that some linguistic devices are applied to these headlines. This paper is intended as an investigation of the linguistic features seen in the headlines both in newspapers and in magazines.

Chapter II Headlines of Newspaper Articles

This chapter presents the unique features of English in headlines of newspaper articles. Various linguistic devices are applied to these headlines, such as the use of the simple present tense, the omission of grammatical words, intertexuality and so forth. Some devices function to economize on space, others function to make headlines attractive. We will examine what these devices are used for in view of the two factors, the limitation of space and the attempt to attract readers' attention.

Chapter III Headlines of Magazine Articles

In this chapter we will take up headlines of articles in magazines. As in the case of headlines in newspapers, we will examine the linguistic devices in headlines in magazines with the two factors, 'space limitation' and 'attention-attracting' in mind.

Chapter IV Comparison of Headlines in Newspapers and Magazines

In this chapter we will examine the difference between the headlines of newspaper articles and the headlines of magazine articles. Newspapers are issued everyday to bring readers the latest news immediately while periodical magazines are issued weekly, monthly or annually. The comparison will be discussed considering the difference of roles between newspapers and magazines.

Chapter V Conclusion

We have seen that the two factors, 'space limitation' and 'attention-attracting' cause the uniqueness of headlines and these two factors derive from the role as newspapers or magazines that is expected by readers. Therefore we may say that the uniqueness of headlines in the press is due to the expectations of readers.
