APA and MLA Templates

Academic papers at the Department of English must be formatted in accordance with APA style (Linguistics, Didactics) or MLA style (Literature): the APA Publication Manual and the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers are available in the Department library.

Templates

To simplify the process of formatting academic papers, the Department of English has developed text processing templates which define all the styles needed. For those who find the stand-alone templates too difficult to set up, we also offer ready-made formatted Word files with the templates pre-applied. Either the templates or the formatted files can be used; they both perform the same functions. The stand-alone templates are more flexible, however, since they can also be applied to existing text files that were created without them.

The templates automatically set the margins, place the pagination (page numbers) in the top right corner, and offer a number of pre-defined paragraph and heading styles. These styles can be assigned simply by picking them from the top left corner of the text processing application.

The templates are still under development. Criticism and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

The formatted Word files are self-explanatory: they just need to be downloaded, opened, and overwritten with new text.

The templates themselves first need to be installed on the system. To do that, copy either of the template files to c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates or wherever your system stores the normal.dot file. Once this is done, the process does not need to be repeated: the template is installed. (Caution: to prevent a template from opening in your browser while downloading, you may have to right-click it and select “Save Link Target as...”)

To open a new Word file with the template applied, click File | New. Select the template from the choices given, keep the “create new document” radio button selected and click OK. This will give you a page with a couple of things pre-formatted and a selection of formatting options in the left corner of your task bar. Edit this file and save it as a regular Word document. This Word document can be edited on any other copy of word and the MLA styles continue to be available regardless of whether the other machine has the template installed or not.

Tip: if you use Microsoft XP, select 書式(O) | スタイルと書式(S) from your toolbar. This will give you a sidebar with all the style choices at your fingertips (Illustration, 37 KB).
